First Entry For Little Sralos

This will be my way of blogging while using my adorable new wireless laptop. It's my first laptop. The thing that always attracted me to laptops is their potential for portability. The idea of being able to take your computer with you anwhere is very appealing. Problem is that laptops are not all that portable. Yes, they're small, but they're heavy and too bulky to fit into the average purse. They're also impractical for real work. Keyboards are too crampeed, number pad is non-existant, touchpads are inefficient and difficult to use, and they're too pricey to make them viable as a just for fun purchase. I could go on, but you get the point. I consider myself to be a "power user" as far as computers are concerned, and power users need a desktop to be really productive. Still, it would be fun to have one around if I happen to find myself dining alone without a book, or I'm stuck in a long line or crowded waiting room. Too bad laptops cost so much and are too large to be truly portable.

Until now!

Now there are inexpensive (read: cheap!) mini-laptops that are really portable. It's small, yes, too small to do any real work on, but I don't want it to work on, I want it to play on. I want to be able to email or surf the web or play games and that's about it. If I want to work on spread sheets or a word processor (although my little laptop can run all the applications that the big boys can) I will use my work or home desktop. If I want to do graphics, I'll work on my home desktop. All this thing needs to do is fit in my purse and keep me entertained when I'm bored. It does that very well.

Today I setup alternate email addresses and account names on the sites I like to shop and surf. My thought is to add items to my watch list while using the Acer, and then I can buy them later (or not) once I get to work or home from secure connections. This way no one who hacks into my laptop on an unsecure wireless network (such as a wifi hotspot) can get any of my real info. There's no real info here.

Typing on the Acer is difficult, but not impossible. The worst part is that my thumb keeps sliding over the touchpad and moves the curser on me. Getting used to the touchpad is hard too. I'm getting better at it, but a scroll mouse is way easier to use. Still, this is fine just for play. And I do love playing with my new Acer.
